2011 NAACP Image Awards: Tyler Perry Wins Top Honors in Movie and TV

Tyler’s drama film, ‘For Colored Girls’, takes home three kudos from the 42nd Annual NAACP Image Awards, while his TV series, ‘House of Payne’, nails Outstanding Comedy Series.Winners of the 42nd Annual NAACP Image Awards have been announced on Friday, March 4, and Tyler Perry has come out triumphant in both movie and TV field. During the live ceremony, the director/writer saw three of his projects, “For Colored Girls”, “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” and “Meet the Browns”, take home at least one gong.
The 41-year-old filmmaker was most successful in the movie field as “Colored Girls” nailed three prizes. The drama film won Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture in addition to bagging Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for cast member Kimberly Elise.
In television, Tyler took the top honor of Outstanding Comedy Series for his “House of Payne”, beating strong competitors like “30 Rock”, “Are We There Yet?”, “Glee” and “Modern Family”. His other series “Meet the Browns” also managed to walk a way with a prize as its star David Mann was honored with Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series.
Other movie winners included Denzel Washington and Halle Berry. Denzel was hailed Outstanding Actor for his role in “The Book of Eli”, while Halle was named Outstanding Actress for “Frankie and Alice”. Additionally, Samuel L. Jackson won Outstanding Supporting Actor for “Mother and Child”.
The TV field, meanwhile, was dominated by “Modern Family” and “True Jackson, VP”. Both TV series grabbed a hold on two prizes each. Supporting actress Sofia Vergara and director Kevin Rodney Sullivan won for “Modern”, while Keke Palmer secured Outstanding Performance in a Youth/Children’s Program for “Jackson”, which also won Outstanding Children’s Program.
NAACP Image Awards also honors the best achievements by people of color in music and literature. This year, its ceremony was held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California, and aired live on FOX. Wayne Brady and Holly Robinson Peete served as the host.
