Carrie Underwood Cast in NBC’s “Sound of Music” Remake
Did ya hear? Carrie Underwood will star in the coveted role of Maria von Trapp in the network’s live broadcast of The Sound of Music.
Smash producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will oversee the Peacock’s version of the three-hour televised musical. Underwood is primarily known for her chart-topping country hits, but she’s dipped her toes in the acting pool with small parts in How I Met Your Mother and the made-for-TV movie Soul Surfer.
In a statement Friday, NBC said:
“We’re thrilled to be presenting the Broadway version of The Sound of Music live and having Carrie Underwood as the star brings it to a new generation who will fall in love with it for the first time as many millions of people already have.”
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music made its Broadway debut in 1959. A 1965 film adaptation, starring Julie Andrews, earned five Academy Awards.
The Sound of Music is expected to air during the 2013 holiday season.
