First Look: Whitney Houston in “Sparkle”
Whitney Houston may be gone, but her starring role in the upcoming movie musical remake Sparkle, will ensure “The Voice” carries on.
The trailer for the much-awaited film was released on Monday. A reboot of the 1976 original of the same name was slated to be Whitney’s big comeback, 20 years after her film debut in The Bodyguard.
In a bittersweet moment for Houston’s legion of fans, it depicts the late singer playing the vivacious mom of three gorgeous daughters who follow in her musical footsteps by forming a singing group.
Debra Martin Chase co-produced the feature with Houston:
“On the one hand, I’m so excited about the movie and we’re really happy with how it turned out. (But) just to have it said yet again that this is Whitney’s last performance, it’s hard. It’s hard.”
There is no mention of drugs in the trailer, but the original Sparkle saw the film’s protagonist, played by Irene Cara, struggling with her beloved older sister’s heroin overdose. Eerie, considering Whitney’s official cause of death has been listed as accidental drowning with cocaine use and heart disease listed as contributing factors.
Chase won’t comment on whether addiction will play as large a role in the new Sparkle. She did, however, reveal that Whitney’s role is “integral” to the plot.
Chase notes that the film shows the “I Will Always Love You” legend at her very best.
“Whitney loved this movie very much. This was her idea. The great thing for me as her friend and her producing partner is that this movie will be an essential part of her legacy…It’s the best performance of her life; she knew it at the time. She looked beautiful on camera and she enjoyed every minute making the movie.”
Sparkle opens in theaters on Aug. 17.
