Katherine Schwarzenegger Breaks Silence On Parents’ Split To Harper’s Bazaar
A famous last name can make finding a date quite a pickle.
Just ask Arnie and Maria’s eldest daughter: Katherine Schwarzenegger.
The author of The New York Times Bestseller Rock What You Got/Adele fanatic, who will be a senior at the University of Southern California this fall, charges the weighty last name with causes some mahjor issues in the boy department freshmen year.
“I thought of changing [Schwarzenegger] because, especially for dating, its impossible, the celebuspawn reveals on the pages of the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar Magazine. “It’s something I deal with every day, and I am hyperconscious about it. When I got to college, peoplemuch more guys than girls because girls dont give a crap about bodybuildingwere coming up to me, and it would automatically jump to a conversation about my dad and weight lifting or how to do a proper bicep curl. It’s like, ‘Do you want to date my father, or do you want to date me? Like, I can arrange that for you.’”
Schwarzenegger, 21, tries to avoid reading headlines about her family, which fell apart at the seams after her dad’s affair and secret son with the longtime family housekeeper were exposed last spring. Katherine’s always been a little closer to her mom, Maria, than she is to her Governator Pop, but the lovechild scandal still managed to hit her like an Acme safe.
“I see them, but I choose not to read the stories because I figure whether it’s true or not, I don’t need to. I just focus on my family and everyone being OK instead of following the gossip,” Katherine explains.
She does credit her parents for shielding she and siblings — Christina, 19, Patrick, 17 and Christopher, 13 — from the spotlight for most of their lives.
“When [the separation] started happening, it was like everything came of nowhere. Even when I would go out to lunch. Literally, 20 people would come and scream at me. And I’m like, This is all so inappropriate; you’re trying to provoke me to say something crazy!”
But, she says: “I really do believe everything happens for a reason. A lot of the time, it’s hard to understand in the moment why things are happening, but I really do think that. I also like to think God doesn’t really give you anything you can’t handle.”
