Beating 50 other contestants in the annual pageant, the current Miss California is named the new Miss USA and set to represent the States in this year’s Miss Universe in Brazil. This year’s Miss USA winner has been crowned and the lucky girl who carries the 2011 title is Alyssa Campanella. The 21-year-old auburn-haired California girl has beaten 50 other contestants to win the prestigious pageant on Sunday night, June 19. As the new Miss USA, Alyssa will represent the nation in the Miss Universe pageant in Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 12.
Alyssa impressed the judges with her coherent answer during the final round of the show. Asked whether or not she believes legalizing marijuana would help the drug war, she answered, “I understand that medical marijuana is very important for those who need it legally. It’s abused, but that’s the only reason I’d be against it. I’m not sure legalizing it would have much of an effect on the drug war.”
Alyssa was crowned at the event taking place at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas by former Miss USA, Rima Fakih, a Lebanese-born Muslim who was the first Arab-American to hold the title. Trailing behind her was Miss Tennessee Ashley Elizabeth Durham who was the runner-up. The third runner-up was Miss Alabama Madeline Mitchell and following behind was Miss Texas Ana Rodriguez at the fourth place.
The judges that night were “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Caroline Manzo, rapper Lil Jon, Dallas Mavericks center Tyson Chandler, chef Rocco DiSpirito and actress Mariel Hemingway. The ceremony was hosted by TV personalities Andy Cohen and Giuliana Rancic, while “Fashion Police” host Kelly Osbourne and Susie Castiollo served as fashion commentators throughout the night.
