Ricky Gervais Returns to Host 2012 Golden Globe Awards
He’s back! Hollywood better take cover: Ricky Gervais will host the 69th Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 15, 2012.
On Wednesday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced via a blog posting titled “Yes, Ricky’s Back…” that the British funnyman will be returning to host the kickoff of the Tinseltown awards season, this despite causing quite a bit of controversy as master of ceremonies at the same event last January. Some critics argued that Gervais’ comedic routine at the 69th Golden Globe Awards went too far. The Office creator took criticism for taking scathing swipes at some of Hollywood’s most famous troublemakers; his jokes included making fun of Robert Downey Jr.’s stints in jail and rehab, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie’s widely panned film The Tourist, and Charlie Sheen’s penchant for pornstars. Tom Cruise and Playboy founder Hugh Hefner were also fodder for Gervais’ wisecracking.
“Aside from the fact that it’s been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister overtones, I’d say the vibe of the show is pretty good, wouldn’t you?” Downey commented during the ceremony, as he presented an award.
At the time, HFPA president Philip Berk said he thought Gervais “crossed the line” with his jokes, but Gervais himself defended his material. Now, the HFPA acknowledges that Rickys return to the Globes might be unsettling to some, but seem excited to bring Ricky back for his third consecutive run as host of the ceremony, which awards the best in TV and film from the past year.
While many welcome Gervaiss return, not everyone is happy with the decision because last year his blunt one-liners targeting big-name celebrities caused anger and resentment in some quarters, the association said in a statement this afternoon. After the show Gervais dismissed the possibility of coming back for a third time, but he gradually warmed to the idea and last month met with HFPA President Dr. Aida Takla-OReilly in Paris to discuss it. He said recently that the idea of going back behind the podium is very tempting.
