Despite initially accusing her accountant of failing to notify her of the $ 718,948.25 owed for the 2008 tax year, and $ 1,024,175.03 for 2009, Sharon has now admitted she had spent too much time focusing on herself recently and didn’t realise her finances were in disarray.
She said: “I’m to blame. Even though [the accountant] is paid to do a job, the buck stops with me. I was too involved with myself. I cancelled two meetings with him over the last 18 months because I was way too busy.
“The bottom line is it stops with me, so I have to face up, be a big woman and realise I’m not Mrs Wonderful.”
Sharon – who appears as a panellist on US TV chat show ‘The Talk’ – admitted the incident was a wake-up call and she is now determined to take better care of the family finances.
She told her fellow co-hosts: “The last couple of years, I have really been concentrating on myself – because I think I love myself a little bit too much – and not taking care of business.
“I get a phone call from a journalist telling me there’s a lien on my house and I’m like ‘Oh dear. I’d better call my accountant.’
“He goes ‘I didn’t know that. Is there?’ I’m like ‘Well if you don’t know, who the hell is going to know?’
“I got really upset with my accountant, and then I sat back and I thought ‘If I’m not invested in my money, or my kids’ money, or my husband’s money, why should he?”‘
However Sharon, who has now filed her tax return, joked: “I didn’t say I would pay it – I just said I was filing.”
